Items once belonging to the now-deceased last American Titantic survivor went up for auction yesterday in England. Some upset family members claim Lillian Gertrud Asplund would not have wanted to sell her belongings. They think donating them to a museum or keeping them in the family would have been wiser. Her father's watch that stopped when he fell into the water, family photos, and the family's passenger ticket were among what was sold.

A number of sources are reporting the results of the auction.

while i sympathize with the family members, if the deceased had wished her possessions to go to a museum, she would have been better served to bequeath them in her will. part of my view on this probably comes from owning a Titanic artifact myself, but unless clear legal instructions are left, the disposal of an estate is up to the inheritor. if the family was this concerned, perhaps they should have made a move to protect the collection before Lillian Asplund's death. i will admit to being more concerned with the dispersement of the collection: historical archives have more value as archives when retained whole.
